Multiplier Symbols

Online slots bonuses come in all shapes and sizes these days. You can hit free spins, Wilds that substitute for other symbols, or bag an instant win triggered at random.

But the prize Multiplier is perhaps the most common bonus feature as it comes in so many different forms.

What Are Multiplying Symbols?

In their most basic form, multipliers are bonuses attached to regular wins. You might trigger a Free Spins with every spin having a 3x multiplier attached. This means whatever you make in the feature is multiplied by three. A slot might double any winning payline that's formed with a Wild, or increase the multiplier if you hit two or three Wilds in a payline.

With a prize multiplier symbol you can seriously increase your payouts. They won't increase the chances of hitting a winning payline, but they reward hitting certain combinations or bonus icons.

It's a good idea to get to know the various slots developers, especially the ones who tend to offer similar games with multipliers. One developer might have a range of slots with progressive multipliers, while another will be generous with its Free Spins multipliers.

Where Can I Find Them?

Most 5-reel online slots feature a multiplier of one kind or another. Many feature several multipliers, both in the base game and the bonus rounds.

Multipliers can apply if you land Wild symbols, a series of consecutive winning paylines, or by triggering a Free Spins round.

Types of Multipliers

Wild Multipliers

Most slots that feature Wilds will also have a multiplier attached. Wild symbols substitute for all regular symbols in the game other than the Scatters or bonus icons. If you complete a winning payline using a Wild, your win will be doubled or trebled.

Some games, like Rival Gaming's Scary Rich II, award bigger multipliers the more Wilds you land. So, if two Wilds are used on a winning payline the win is multiplied by 3. If you hit three Wilds, you bag a 6x multiplier, and four Wilds gives you a 13x multiplier on your win.

Regular Multipliers

While some multipliers apply if attached to Wilds or Scatters, some slots feature symbols that ARE the multipliers. These consist of well-signposted '2x' or '3x' symbols that form part of the reels. Complete a winning payline using one or two of those and the prize will be multiplied by the total shown.

Progressive Multipliers

Some slots on the market use progressive multipliers, or Multiplier Meters. They're a throwback to old-school UK fruit machines, where each win bags you bigger and bigger multipliers.

These work by adding a prize multiplier to each consecutive win you hit on the reels. For each consecutive win, the multiplier will rise, typically from 1x to 2x, 3x, 4x and so on. The multiplier is attached to the total of ALL line wins on that spin.

The feature is commonly found in slots where 'Cascading Reels/Tumbling Reels' are found. When you hit a winning combination the symbols will disappear from the reels and are replaced by the icons above. These then form more winning combos, and so on until the wins stop. Once this happens, the multiplier meter will reset to 1x.

Example: Crown Gems (Barcrest) - The popular Barcrest slot is showing its age, but is still popular due to its generous multiplier meter. The progressive meter runs from 1x-10x and increases every time you hit consecutive wins. Despite there being only 10 paylines in the game, the wins tend to keep coming.

Bonus Feature Multipliers

Multipliers can commonly be found in slots bonus rounds. Most modern 5-reel slots feature at least one bonus feature (free spins, a 'Pick Me' bonus, or a Trail) with a multiplier attached.

Free Spins: Free spins are awarded if you hit three or more Scatters on the reels. A number of free spins (e.g. 10-20) will be awarded, and a multiplier is usually attached to all wins.

Pick Me Bonus: This bonus is also triggered by landing three Scatters on the reels. You'll usually be taken to a second screen where you get to choose from 10 or 12 items. Each one conceals a cash prize, free spins, or a multiplier.

Wheel of Fortune: Some online slots feature a Wheel of Fortune bonus similar to the big-money slot machines you'll find in Las Vegas. Triggered by five bonus Scatters (in a Progressive Jackpot game) or three regular Scatters, you'll be presented with a prize wheel containing cash prizes, spins and multipliers. If the wheel stops on a 2x or 3x icon, your cash prize is multiplied.

Trail Bonus: The modern Trail Bonus is similar to the old multiplier trails on British fruit machines. In the bonus round, you have to work your way along a path or game board collecting cash prizes and multipliers as you go.

Some games involve the roll of a dice or spin of a wheel to determine how far you move along the trail. Multipliers are added up and applied to your cash win at the end of the round.

Example: Rainbow Riches (Barcrest) - Nowhere are bonus multipliers than in Irish-themed slots. Rainbow Riches features a Trail Bonus (triggered by hitting three or more Scatters) where a plucky leprechaun has to make his way to the pot of gold. Along the way he can pick up free spins, cash prizes, or bonus multipliers. These accumulate to award the player at the end of the round.
